Testing CO detectors
We recently tested several popular CO detectors to see which work best. We also tested the low level CO monitors that we recommend. The public buys and installs these standard units and believe that they are now fully protected. The actual results are scary.
The typical CO alarms that are sold in retail stores give almost no protection to those people that would be most at risk for CO poisoning. At levels that would cause the fire department to "bunker up" (meaning putting on all their gear including SCBA breathing masks), regular units will not alarm unless the problem persists for 30 days! A pregnant woman, infant, elderly person or someone with heart or respiratory trouble (asthma?) could be subjected to constant low levels of carbon monoxide without a store bought unit sounding an alarm.
The standards that various organizations use to determine a "safe" level vary widely.
Some are as low as 9 PPM (parts per million) and range up to 50 PPM for one hour exposure. Some common standards are here.
The UL standard for a store bought CO alarm is that it won't alarm below 70 PPM for 30 days!
Given the results of our testing, the only type of unit that we recommend is a low level CO monitor. Here's what we do.
We offer this service for $289 including the monitor. But for a limited time we're discounting it to $189. Offer expires Sept 15th 2009. Call today for an on-time appointment.
